Mr. Hobby Aqueous Hobby Color — Flat Black

Achieve a deep, rich, and completely glare-free finish with Mr. Hobby Aqueous Flat Black. This premium acrylic is the ultimate choice for modelers looking to replicate ultra-dark shadows, scale tires, cockpit details, or classic military schemes. Part of the world-class Aqueous Hobby Color line, it combines superior coverage and a dead-flat finish with the safety and ease of a water-based formula.

Key Features:

  • Deep, True Flat Finish: Specially formulated to dry to a beautiful, uniform matt finish with absolutely zero unwanted sheen or reflectivity.

  • Safe and User-Friendly: The water-based acrylic resin formula is low-odor and comfortable to use indoors. It is the ideal choice for hobbyists painting in home environments or those who prefer working without the harsh smells of solvent-based paints.

  • Superior Self-Leveling: Formulated to settle evenly across the surface, this paint minimizes brush marks and ensures a clean, uniform finish, resulting in a sleek, factory-quality coat.

  • Durable and Versatile: Once fully cured, the flat surface is resilient and provides a fantastic, stable base for dry-brushing metallic highlights, applying dust pigments, or weathering.

Application Guide:

  • Hand Brushing: Stir thoroughly before use with a paint stirrer to ensure the flatting agents are fully mixed. Apply in thin, consistent layers. If the paint feels too thick, a small amount of Aqueous Thinner will improve flow.

  • Airbrushing: Thin at a ratio of roughly 1:1 to 1:1.5 (Paint to Thinner). Using Aqueous Thinner is highly recommended to achieve the smoothest atomization and prevent dry-spraying.

Pro-Tips for a Perfect Flat Black Finish:

The "Scale Black" Trick: Pure black can sometimes look artificially harsh on small-scale models. To create a more realistic "scale black" for tires, tank tracks, or cockpits, mix in a tiny drop of Flat White or Flat Grey to soften the intensity.

Excellent for Pre-Shading: This paint is perfect for airbrushing along panel lines and in deep recesses before you apply your main base color, helping you create realistic depth and shadow effects.

Cleanup: Clean your tools with water or specialized acrylic cleaner immediately after use. For dried paint in your airbrush, a dedicated hobby tool cleaner is recommended.
